Treating Constipation in accordance with Islamic Medicine

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahiim

Prophet's Guidance on treating Constipation

Tirmizi and Ibn Majah narrated that the Messenger of Allah asked Asma Bint Umais Radiy Allahu Anha, "How do you deal with constipation? She said, by using Shubrum (Euphorbia).

Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, it is hot and a strong laxative, she then said, in addition I use Senna and the Prophet replied, if there is a cure that prevents death, it would be Senna ".

Furthermore, Ibn Majah narrated that Abudllah bin Umm Haram said that he heard the Messenger of Allah saying: "Use Senna and Sanoot, because they cure every disease except Saam". He was asked, "What is Saam?” He said, "Death".

Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam asked the woman about what she uses to treat constipation, meaning what cure she uses to help soften the stool, so that the body is able to get rid of its harmful waste.

In another narration of the Hadith, Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam asked Asma about what she uses to cure constipation, and she mentioned the Shubrum (Euphorbia), which is the bark of the root of Euphorbia tree and which is dry and hot in the fourth degree. The best type of Shubrum is the one that is reddish in color, which is soft and feels like wrapped skin.

Shubrum is among the medications that doctors do not advise people to use because it is a very strong laxative. In the Hadith, our beloved Prophet described Shubrum as being hot and a strong laxative.

Senna is a plant that grows in HIJAZ (Western Arabia) and the best kind of it grows in Makkah, Senna is hot and dry in the first degree and it is a good, mild medication that does not cause any side effects. Senna helps against bile and black bile ailments and strengthens the heart.

Senna is useful against melancholic obsession and corporal incisions, relaxes the muscles and improves the hair. It helps against lice, headache, mange, pustules, rashes and epilepsy. It is better to cook Senna as a whole and drink three measures of its soup than cooking it crushed. In addition, it is better to cook the Senna mixed with violet flowers and red raisins, after removing the seeds.

Al-Razi said, Senna and fumitory help extract mature humors (bodily wastes) and helps against leprosy and rashes, when one takes four to seven measures of each remedy.

As for Sanoot (cumin), there is a difference of opinion concerning its nature. Umar bin Bakr As-Saksaki said that Sonoot is either honey or butter extract. Another opinion suggests that Sonoot is a seed that resembles the cumin, as Ibn Al-Arabi has asserted. The fourth and filth opinions suggest that Sonoot is the Persian cumin or fennel, according to Abu Hanifah Al Daynoori.

The sixth opinion suggests that it is the Shibitt (DILL SEEDS), and seventh opinion suggests that it is the dates, according to Abu Bakr bin As-Sunni. The eight opinion suggests that it is honey that exists in butter-skin. Some doctors stated that the last meaning is the most probable. In this case, Sonoot is prepared by blending Senna powder with some honey mixed in Ghee, as this is better than taking Senna alone.

Then, one licks the mixture that contains Senna, because of the honey & butter which assist further the laxative features of Senna, Allah Knows the Best. Wallahu Ta'ala A'alamu. Barakallahu fiikum Ajma'in.

Treating Conjunctivitis Islamically

Treating Conjunctivitis أَعُوذُ بِاللّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ Prophet's Guidance on treating conjunctivitis with rest and observing a special diet     We mentioned that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam required Suhaib Radi Allahu Anhu to observe a diet from eating dates when he was suffering from conjunctivitis, and asked Ali Radi Allahu Anhu when he was suffering from the same condition. Furthermore, Abu Naeem narrated in his book, "The Prophetic Medicine", "Whenever any of the Prophet's wives would come down with conjunctivitis, he would not touch her until her eyes were cured".     Conjunctivitis is an infection that attacks the conjunctiva; that is the white part of the eye. The disease is caused by one of the four conditions [hotness, coldness, ...

Islamic Foundations of Well-Being

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahiim DO NOT FORGET TO RECITE SURATUL KAHF today As Sunnah of every Juma'a. Barakallahu Fiikum Ajma'iin The Prophet Muhammad laid down the foundation for a social order in which every member of society was advised to maintain a healthy life, physically, psychologically, and spiritually. No aspect of life was to be disregarded. In the opinion of Douglas Guthrie (A History of Medicine, 1945), great advances in medicine made by Muslims during the Middle Ages were mainly due to the impact of the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Guthrie writes, “Had not the Prophet Muhammad himself said, ‘O Servant of God, use medicine, because God hath not created a pain without a remedy for it’”? Guthrie failed to quote the source of this important prophetic saying, but it is obvious that he was referring to the famous hadith from Tirmidhi (one of the six most important collections of prophetic traditions). As a matter of fact, there are several such sayings in...

Changing Old-Age Attitudes

There were several occasions when the Prophet (SAW) visited the sick, and after enquiring about the ailments advised to take the medicine prescribed from experienced physicians. On several occasions he advised the sick to approach Harith bin Kalda, a well-known Jewish physician of Thaqif (a place near Madinah, Saudi Arabia where the Prophet (SAW) resided at the time). The Prophet Muhammad PBUH, realizing the consequences of infectious epidemics, advised his companions that, “When you hear about a break of plague in any area, do not enter there and when it has broken in a land where you are, then do not run way from it (and thus spread it elsewhere).” On the basis of this hadith, Muslims considered precaution and vigilance against infectious epidemics as the command of God. The Prophet (SAW) also opposed charms and incantations as a form of remedy for diseases. On some occasions, however, when physical remedy (medicine) was not available, he allowed, mainly for psych...
